Disclaimer & how this works
This tool checks your VLT% against your state's published legal limits. Some states allow medical exemptions for darker tint with proper documentation. Not legal advice — verify with your state DMV before applying tint.
How to check your tint in 30 seconds
- Find your tint VLT%. It's on your installer receipt or the film packaging. No paperwork? A $20 VLT meter clips onto the glass and reads the percentage.
- Pick your state and the window. Front side windows are usually the strictest, with rear windows often more lenient or unrestricted.
- Compare. If your VLT is equal to or greater than the legal limit, you're street-legal. Lower (darker) means a likely ticket.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my tint VLT percentage?
Check the receipt or warranty card from your installer. If you bought film yourself, the VLT% is printed on the packaging. A digital tint meter (~$20 on Amazon) clips onto the window and reads the percentage directly.
What is VLT and why does it matter?
VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — the percentage of visible light passing through your window plus the tint. 5% VLT is very dark "limo tint"; 70% VLT is nearly clear. Each state sets a minimum VLT% for each window position.
Can I get a medical exemption for darker tint?
Most states offer medical exemptions for conditions like lupus, photosensitivity, or melanoma. You typically need a physician's certificate kept in the vehicle at all times. See medical exemption requirements by state.
Does this calculator account for SUV vs sedan rules?
The default check uses sedan rules. Many states allow darker tint on the back side and rear windows of SUVs and trucks. See state pages for SUV-specific limits.
Is reflective or mirrored tint legal?
Reflective tint is restricted or banned in many states. Each state page lists the exact rule.
