How to check your tint in 30 seconds

  1. Find your tint VLT%. It's on your installer receipt or the film packaging. No paperwork? A $20 VLT meter clips onto the glass and reads the percentage.
  2. Pick your state and the window. Front side windows are usually the strictest, with rear windows often more lenient or unrestricted.

How do I find my tint VLT percentage?

Check the receipt or warranty card from your installer. If you bought film yourself, the VLT% is printed on the packaging. A digital tint meter (~$20 on Amazon) clips onto the window and reads the percentage directly.

What is VLT and why does it matter?

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — the percentage of visible light passing through your window plus the tint. 5% VLT is very dark "limo tint"; 70% VLT is nearly clear. Each state sets a minimum VLT% for each window position.

Can I get a medical exemption for darker tint?

Most states offer medical exemptions for conditions like lupus, photosensitivity, or melanoma. You typically need a physician's certificate kept in the vehicle at all times. See medical exemption requirements by state.
